Modern Japanese House Renovation Interior Design | Senri Greenery House | Senri | Japan | Hitotomori Design Studio

This is a renovation of a boxed-frame type reinforced concrete house facing an area of greenery that has been well-tended for fifty years in the town of Senri, Japan.

When it comes to renovation, it is crucial for our design to maximise the inherent potential already found within a building.The building looks out over a large area of greenery and within already contains an abundance of airy spaces. It was our task to utilize these open spaces while at the same time considering each room’s proportions and details to create an even more intimate interplay between the natural greenery outside and the rooms themselves. In addition, a slanted roof supported by the building’s steel frame provided even more open space with which to work. In order that these voluminous spaces would be perceived not so much as ‘rooms’ but as an ‘environment’, our design took in the factors of heat, natural light, ventilation, and greenery to create a space which suggested to this camping and nature loving family a way of life where each and every member, by choosing their own favorite spots from the home environment, would be able create their own personal living space.

The exquisite blue of both the front stained-glass window and exterior walls already combined to give the entranceway one of the house’s defining characteristics. To bring this characteristic into the house and use it to maximum effect, we constructed the foyer and front hall floors, walls, and ceilings with mortar, and limited the materials we used to ones that would be dyed a rich blue when bathed in the light from the stained-glass.

The entrance to each room was already composed of a deep-set, low-ceilinged veneer tunnel. Our design utilized the contrast between this tunnel and the wider space found within the room to further emphasize the intimate relationship of each room’s open blue airiness and the natural greenery outside, and draw out the inherent potential in both entranceway and room.

Within the passage of time we can find divers objects of beauty; through our design, we have endeavored to create a space in which these objects realize their full potential, a space in which they are respected and held in the highest regard, a space in which a home is fully and truly revived.......more

The original home had the living room towards the chamfered facade and the main bedroom on the other end. The kitchen was small and dark, and was linked to the living room by means of a narrow hallway. The bathroom, accessed through the kitchen, had the only shower of the dwelling and was situated in front of a third bedroom. This distribution generated spaces that were dark and difficult to locate fixed equipment. Throughout the house, the rock extrudes into the space, contrasting with the luxurious textures of the furnishings. Interior and exterior fireplace hearths are carved out of existing stone; leveled on top, they are otherwise left raw. The master bathroom’s sink is composed of water cascading through three polished pools in the existing stone. Off the main space, a powder room is fully carved out of the rock. A skytube is through to the top of the rock and topped by glass. The house opens stone wrapped in the sun all day, rejecting the views to the outside, getting in contact with the sun receives a very light house. Only notice some details of brick and woodwork with all formwork, we could no finish to divert attention from a house that seems in constant motion by light. The house is one of a row of detached Federation houses built in 1901 and sits on ridge overlooking Cooper Park. The frontages are mostly intact however the rear of the properties facing north are diverse in both character and quality. Our house was badly renovated in the 1970's and as such only the front street facing room and street facade was retained. The project involved the complete removal of all other structure and the excavation of a new complete floor level under the existing street entry level including a pool. The street frontage had to be restored so we endeavored to create a contrasting contemporary rear facade that addressed the northern aspect and the Park. The edge treatment of the new rear balcony literally frames these views. The small scale of the footprint resulted in the need for careful spatial connects both horizontally and vertically to extend the available space. A new slatted light court replaces the existing front terrace. Floor level changes, joinery elements and ceiling treatments create and conceal spaces. The property has been in the family for many years and our client lived in this house over looking Cooper Park as a child. It was therefore pleasing to carefully remodel the house for her young family in turn.........more

The main task was to create a new structure that would accommodate a spacious single storey living space with a kitchen and a dining area. Existing building was to be refurbished to house a garage and storage functions in the ground floor and bedrooms in the upper level. New structure is attached to the existing one with the staircase. The entire building is clearly divided into two volumes - the old one with its historical charm that shows its primary usage and the addition that is a clean contemporary form. The house initially showed rooms available chained joined together by double doors. These adjoining rooms were related to annex corridor unfolded the tour of the house, preventing the passage of service through the rooms and relating in a more efficient kitchen, laundry room, pantry and sink access.
This organization stays linked provided the user the ability to retrofit the house to different requirements of use with great economy of means. The generous way we get through the double doors, comparable to a moving boundary, can programmatically link the pieces, can multiply the size of a room holding some open doors, or even in a situation of absolute permeability when all doors are open. On the other hand, closing the doors, and thanks to all the rooms have more than one access, you can achieve different levels of partitioning according to application requirements, number of inhabitants, etc.........more

An early modernist house designed in 1940 by Charles Warner, and neglected for many years was given a new life as a secondary residence for a Manhattan couple and their child. The original circulation and main features of the house were lost when it was converted to a multiple dwelling. Assisted by the original plan, published in a MoMA guide to Modern Architecture in the Northeast States, the house was restored and functionally updated. An enclosed glass walkway facing a rear terrace was reconfigured to link the second floor living area to the exterior. A large stone fireplace was exposed on all sides opening the kitchen to the living and dining areas. Spaces that seamlessly flow from inside to outside and that have been designed to maximise the million dollar views while also providing a sense of intimacy and sense of home.
The palette does not intend to challenge the user, but rather encase them lightly. The emphasis on function and the use of natural light was aimed to create space and openness with a paired back contemporary interior to suit all future occupants.

This former ambulance garage in the centre of Rotterdam borders on a secluded park. Replacing the rear wall with a large glass window creates a direct relationship to it.

The dugout in the middle of the building generates height for a second level. A polycarbonate lightbox with integrated LED lights houses the bedrooms and spans the space above the living-kitchen.

Custom-made cupboard, kitchen and stairs finished in bright orange polyurethane, link the dugout to the entrance hall on the street side and the living room on the park side.....more

This project involved renovating an old wooden house on the Shibuya River in Tokyo's Ebisu neighbourhood into a live-work space. The house had accumulated some strange and wonderful features -an inner courtyard, an oddly long hallway, a tiny room- from a series of earlier renovations, so we decided to build on these earlier features, but also to "acclimate" the space to the new owner's lifestyle. The hallway became a study, and the small Japanese-style room a studio. Veins of moss pattern the riverbank outside the windows, so we used similar veins of dry moss on the interior walls to subtly connect existing spaces with newly-renovated ones, and the house's interior environment to its exterior one. Most wallpaper imitates nature through a two-dimensional representation of it, and cladding the walls entirely in moss would simply have been too much. We wanted something in-between, so we applied the moss in a pattern that looked like wallpaper, creating an ambiguous texture that's neither artificial nor natural. The same pattern appears on the cable outlet, and on the doorframes and door handles of the office, further synthesizing the moss pattern with the space.....more

The makeover of a rickety 70’s house on steep lot in Ashbury Heights resulted in a modern light-filled aerie with wide-open expanses of glass capturing views and bringing in natural light. White walls and white terrazo floors allow one to clearly register the changing patterns of the light throughout the day. Balconies on every level connect the spaces to the outdoors, enabling a full immersion into the elements – sun, wind, and fog. Feature elements like the fireplace and kitchen casework were treated like compositional

Capturing the character of Dalí, Jugendstil forms, Spanish facades and nautical life in one villa.

The clients asked for a very personal house which would reflect their passions. They are nautical minded and have a love of art, sculptures and especially the work of Salvador Dalí. During the initial design discussions 123DV architecture were also showed pictures of ancient Spanish architecture. They were fascinated by the closed white stucco facades and metal fences in Jugendstil design. So the challenge was to combine in one villa the beautiful Jugendstil forms, the closed facades, the treasures of the diving world and the unique works of the artist Dalí.....more

The “Laboratory of Living” is a former garage or warehouse, situated in the 19th district of Utrecht, converted into a residential space for two occupants.

The design paid particular attention to the room lighting, a convincing mix of materials and the maximisation of the available space. The warehouse originally featured two storeys, with a garage door on the ground floor, which is now completely glazed and a window on the top floor, which is executed as a zinc-clad bay. In order to make optimal use of the two floors, each measuring 5 x 6 m, all new additions such as the bathroom, kitchen block and wall units were accommodated on the three closed wall faces.

The dominant materials are rough wood, zinc, plaster and re-exposed brick masonry. The colour scheme is essentially restricted to white, black, and shades of grey.......more
