"Commissioned to convert the interior of an old steam cooling station nestled on the banks of the Main river in Frankfurt into new offices for the graphic agency Sign Kommunikation. With its dark brick façade and loophole-like windows framed by red and white folding shutters, an office layout was conceived based on generous and natural use of space, while specifying varying materials as exposed concrete and walnut to create masterful contrasts. The centre of the building is a ten-meter (thirty feet) high concrete entrance hall whilst its true centrepiece is an atmosphere created especially for the needs of creative minds, which is at once equally conducive to individual contemplation, communication and teamwork. Born in Germany, Philipp Mainzer studied product design at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, and architecture at the Architectural Association both in London. In 1995 Philipp Mainzer co-founded the modern furniture brand e15. Having established the progressive, enduring philosophy and unique branding of e15, he has received international awards for many of his designs, which are identifying icons for e15 and part of several permanent exhibitions in museums. Parallel to the creation of e15, Philipp Mainzer practiced architecture in New York and continues to do so since his return to Germany in 2001. He is a member of the executive committee of German Design Council and regularly gives lectures on architecture, design and branding. Philipp Mainzer is creative and managing director of e15 and his architecture office.
