La Matta is a simple Italian sandwich shop on Austin’s East Side serving high-quality ingredients and a variety of Italian wines and beers. “My goal with La Matta is to bring authentic Italian sandwiches to Austin,” Chef Halilaj says. “Authentic meaning there is no interpretation—this is what you would eat in Italy, presented in exactly the same way.” Locally made terra cotta tile references the beauty of simple, raw, pragmatic materials commonly used in both Texan and Italian buildings.
